🇻🇳🇸🇬 Vietnam–Singapore Relations: What Happened in the First Half of 2026?
The first half of 2026 has been an active period for Vietnam–Singapore cooperation, with both governments placing greater focus on trade, investment, technology, finance, green growth and supply chains.
Here are some of the key developments worth watching:
January – Finance & Investment
Vietnam and Singapore stepped up cooperation in financial services, fintech and green finance. Vietnam also called for more Singaporean investment in infrastructure, energy, logistics and high-tech industries.
The next generation of VSIP industrial parks is also being developed with a stronger focus on green, smart and high-tech manufacturing.
February – Stronger Economic Connectivity
Both sides continued to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Cooperation priorities included:
• Expanding VSIP, with a target of 30 VSIPs in 2026
• Offshore wind and electricity exports
• Carbon credits and the green economy
• Increasing Singapore’s imports of Vietnamese agricultural and food products
April – Technology & Talent
Technology and human capital became increasingly important areas of cooperation.
Vietnam and Singapore continued discussions around digital transformation, science and technology, high-quality talent and the development of Vietnam’s international financial centre.
May – A Major Milestone
Vietnam’s General Secretary and President To Lam paid a State Visit to Singapore.
The visit brought cooperation to a broader level, covering:
🌱 Green economy
💻 Digital economy
🔬 Science & technology
⚡ Clean energy
🏭 Advanced manufacturing
💰 Finance and investment
🚢 Logistics and ports
🔗 Supply chains
🎓 Education and talent development
May 29 was particularly significant, with a number of cooperation documents signed or exchanged.
These included cooperation in:
• Supply-chain resilience
• Agriculture and food trade
• Advanced manufacturing
• VSIP projects
• Education
• Justice
• Public-sector development
• Party-to-party cooperation
One notable example was the MOU between Becamex IDC and Singapore’s A*STAR to establish an Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Center.
Technology is becoming a new bridge between the two countries
The Vietnam–Singapore Technology Connectivity Forum highlighted opportunities in:
AI | Advanced Manufacturing | Digital Transformation | R&D | Innovation | Technology Transfer
This is an important shift: the relationship is moving beyond traditional trade and investment towards technology, innovation and higher-value manufacturing.
Trade is also growing strongly
During the first four months of 2026:
📈 Total Vietnam–Singapore trade reached around SGD 18.8 billion, up 43.7% year-on-year.
🇸🇬 Singapore’s imports from Vietnam reached around SGD 8.5 billion, an increase of 133%.
Electronics, components, machinery, equipment and fuels were among the major areas recording strong growth.
June – Turning cooperation into business
The Vietnam Coffee Festival in Singapore brought Vietnamese coffee businesses together with importers, distributors and potential partners in Singapore.
This is perhaps the most practical part of the story:
Diplomacy → Business Connections → Trade → Market Expansion
What does this mean for Vietnamese SMEs?
Looking at these developments, I see several areas with growing potential:
Food & Agriculture – coffee, rice, seafood, processed food and high-value agricultural products
Manufacturing & Supply Chains – components, machinery, automation, logistics, packaging and industrial services
Technology & Digital – AI, fintech, cybersecurity, software and digital solutions
Green Economy – renewable energy, carbon credits, green finance and sustainable manufacturing
Investment & Financial Services – fintech, investment, banking, asset management and business services
Singapore is no longer simply a destination market for Vietnamese companies.
It is increasingly a strategic partner for capital, technology, finance and supply-chain connectivity — and a gateway to the wider ASEAN and global markets.
For Vietnamese SMEs looking at Singapore, the opportunity is not only about selling products. It is also about finding the right local partner, distributor, technology partner, investor or business network.
🇻🇳🤝🇸🇬 The next step is turning stronger government-to-government relations into real business-to-business opportunities.
